Bangladesh’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood has directed power sector agencies to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for upgrading the country’s electricity system to support the introduction of nuclear power generation.
Speaking at a review meeting with the heads of power transmission and distribution utilities on Monday, the adviser stressed the need to make the national power system safer, smarter, and more resilient before the commissioning of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

The meeting reviewed the current state of Bangladesh’s transmission and distribution network, existing weaknesses, smart grid development, and the challenges associated with integrating nuclear power into the national grid.
Mahmood said the country must identify potential risks and take advance measures to prevent system failures once nuclear power begins supplying electricity. He emphasized the importance of establishing a National Research Center and undertaking detailed technical studies to ensure grid readiness.
The Minister instructed the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) to prepare a concept paper on smart grid development and the requirements for integrating nuclear power. The study will be reviewed by international consultants with experience in nuclear energy systems, and their recommendations will guide future upgrades to the transmission and distribution network.
“Nuclear power is a highly sophisticated technology that requires extensive preparation and strict safety measures. Ensuring public safety must remain our top priority,” he said.
Mahmood noted that Bangladesh’s power sector has evolved from a predominantly gas-based system to a more diversified energy mix that includes coal and solar power. The addition of nuclear energy will require stronger synchronization between generation, transmission, and distribution systems to avoid operational disruptions and potential grid failures.
He also revealed that several unnecessary power sector projects have already been identified and that investigations are underway to determine responsibility for their implementation.
Senior officials, including Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh, Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Rezaul Karim and PGCB Chief Engineer Manjurul Islam attended the meeting and briefed the adviser on the sector’s current capabilities, challenges, and development plans.
