Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood on Sunday informed Parliament that outstanding payments to government and private power plants have reached approximately Tk 52,300 crore.
Responding to a question from BNP lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18), the minister said the total dues—including electricity imports—stood at Tk 52,300 crore as of April 9, 2026.
He broke down the figures, stating that Tk 11,634.06 crore is owed to Petrobangla for unpaid gas bills by both public and private entities.
The minister said Tk 17,357.68 crore is due as capacity and fuel payments to gas- and fuel oil-based Independent Power Producer (IPP) plants. A further Tk 15,452.91 crore is outstanding for coal costs and capacity payments to joint venture and IPP coal-based power plants.
He added that government-owned power companies are owed Tk 5,623.03 crore in capacity and fuel payments, while Tk 198.94 crore remains pending as hauling charges.
In addition to these liabilities, the minister informed Parliament that total bank loans taken by power plants in the country have reached Tk 1,49,311.26 crore.
