Maitree Project Supplies Over 9% of National Electricity, Ensuring Grid Stability
Dhaka, May 3, 2026 (PR) — The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (Rampal), a joint venture between Bangladesh and India, played a crucial role in supporting the national grid during peak electricity demand in April 2026.
The plant generated more than 760 million units (kWh) of electricity during the month, operating at an average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of around 80%. During the first week of April—when extreme heat drove electricity demand sharply higher—it achieved an impressive PLF of 97%. Overall, Rampal contributed over 9% of Bangladesh’s total electricity generation for the month.

This marks the fifth time the Rampal plant has exceeded 700 million units of monthly generation, underscoring its operational consistency and reliability. With rising temperatures across the country increasing pressure on the power system, the plant maintained high availability and efficiency, helping ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
The plant is equipped with high-efficiency generation units and advanced emission control technologies, including Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD), designed to align with environmental standards while delivering dependable baseload power.
Ramanath Pujari, Managing Director of Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited, highlighted the significance of the plant’s performance, “Operating at around 80% PLF during a period of peak demand reflects the plant’s capability to deliver consistent and reliable power. This level of performance is the result of strong operational practices and sustained team effort.”
As Bangladesh continues to diversify and strengthen its energy mix, large-scale generation assets like Rampal remain critical for maintaining system reliability, affordability, and resilience—especially during periods of extreme weather and peak demand.
