Dhaka, March 13, 2026 (EP) - Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is expected to be connected to the national grid on a trial basis between June and July this year.

He said the plant will officially begin the fuel loading process on April 7, marking a key step toward starting power generation. According to the minister, one unit of the project is expected to reach its full capacity of about 1,200 megawatts by December.

The minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting with Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Khozin at the Planning Commission in Dhaka.

Emphasizing the urgency of addressing the country’s energy shortage, he said it is crucial to bring the power plant into operation as soon as possible.

He added that the government is giving top priority to adding new electricity to the national grid to ensure the country’s energy security.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving energy stability by using all possible options to meet the country’s growing power demand.

Regarding diplomatic and economic engagement with the United States, he said the government is closely monitoring developments and will observe how the situation evolves in the future.

He further noted that alongside the state-owned nuclear power project, private sector participation in the energy sector will continue to help address the ongoing energy challenges.
