The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a focus group discussion titled “Powering Bangladesh Toward Energy Security” recently at the Sheraton Dhaka Hotel. The event was supported by Chevron Bangladesh, an industry leader whose 30-year partnership has significantly contributed to Bangladesh’s economic growth and community development, with an investment of approximately USD 4.2 billion as the country’s largest gas producer, supplying nearly 60% of domestic demand.
In his opening remarks, Syed Ershad Ahmed, President of AmCham Bangladesh, underscored that energy security is now critically important for Bangladesh. He highlighted the persistent challenges in the energy sector, including fuel shortages, outdated transmission and distribution systems, declining gas reserves, and overreliance on imported fuels—all of which undermine system reliability and hinder industrial growth. Strengthening regulatory governance, accelerating gas exploration, upgrading infrastructure, expanding renewable energy capacity, and creating clearer investment pathways are essential to ensuring a resilient, secure, and future-ready energy ecosystem.
Paul Frost, Commercial Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, moderated the session, reaffirming the United States’ continued commitment to strengthening U.S. – Bangladesh trade and investment cooperation. The event was also attended by Eric M. Walker, Vice President of AmCham and President of Chevron Bangladesh; Prof. M. Tamim, renowned petroleum and mineral resources engineering expert and Vice Chancellor of IUB; Muhammad Imrul Kabir, Director of Corporate Affairs at Chevron Bangladesh; AmCham members from the power and energy sector; and senior leaders from major companies in the industry.
