Russia’s state atomic energy corporation Rosatom will support the west african country Burkina Faso in developing the latter’s national program for the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom and Ya?ouba Zabré Gouba, Minister for Energy, Mines, and Quarries of Burkina Faso signed three Memoranda of Understanding in St. Petersburg, Russia, recently.

Areas of cooperation under the memoranda include training and education in the field of nuclear energy, development of nuclear infrastructure, and creating positive public opinion about nuclear energy. The memoranda also specify concrete steps to build human resources for Burkina Faso's nuclear sector.  Steps include cooperation between educational institutions of Russia and Burkina Faso, joint short-term educational programs, teachers’ training, development of educational and scientific literature, and student exchanges.

Current needs for developing Burkina Faso's nuclear infrastructure will be determined following International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendations and Rosatom's best practices.

Earlier in October 2023 Rosatom and Burkina Faso signed the first-ever Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in peaceful use of nuclear energy.
