The government plans to construct about 26.8 kilometers new railway lines to connect series of mega coal-fired power plants set up in various parts of the country.
The government has a plan to generate 18,392MW electricity from 14 mega coal-fired power plants that will require 56 million tons of coal annually.
Of the plants, three mega plants -- Payara, Matarbari and Rampal -- are on right track as per the schedule, said official concerned.
The Bangladesh Railway (BR) will require 408 hector of land to construct the new railway link, official said.
The BR has already conducted a feasibility study and detail design of Matarbari-Moheskhali rail line under Asian Development Bank (ADB) financing.
Consultant appointed by the BR has already proposed three rail corridor options to connect Moheskhali and Matarbari areas by Railway.
