Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is facing a serious storage problem and counting demurrage charge for the delay in unloading of fuel by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) from oil tankers.
PDB unloaded only 27,638 tonnes of petroleum fuel between February and May this year against its total demand of 176,885 tonnes for feeding five power plants to produce 800 megawatts of electricity.
In a recent letter to BPDB chairman, BPC director marketing Sarwar Alam informed that they are facing problems as BPDB is delaying the delivery of their fuel from oil tankers anchored at the port jetties.
According to BPC sources, four diesel loaded ships—MT Kansas, SW Sourth Port-1, MT Dalmacinji and MT Angel No-6 are now waiting on the at Chittagong port’s outer anchorage for releasing fuels.
Besides, two lighter ships carrying 60,000 tonnes of fuel will also reach Chittagong port shortly.
“BPDB will be liable to pay the demurrage due to delay in unloading petroleum fuels,” BPC said in the letter.
