Dhaka, 8 October 2026 (PR) - AkijBashir Group has become the first Bangladeshi company to join RE100, a global corporate initiative bringing together businesses committed to powering their operations with 100% renewable electricity.
Led by the international non-profit Climate Group, RE100 has more than 400 corporate members worldwide. Members commit to sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2050 at the latest and report their progress annually against the initiative’s technical criteria.
For AkijBashir Group, joining RE100 provides a global framework to make its renewable-energy transition more structured, measurable and transparent. The commitment builds on the Group’s existing investments in solar power, energy efficiency, waste-heat recovery and resource conservation across its manufacturing operations.
The Group has developed around 90MW of solar generation capacity across its particle board, ceramics, glass and other facilities and plans to expand its renewable-energy portfolio further.
At Akij Ceramics in Trishal, a 24.39MWp rooftop solar project is expected to generate about 28,050MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce approximately 22,440 tonnes of CO? emissions each year. Around 10MW of the project is connected to the national grid through net metering.
AkijBashir Glass in Habiganj has installed an 18.2MW rooftop solar system with battery storage, enabling greater use of solar power beyond daylight hours. The facility also uses waste-heat recovery to generate steam and electricity, with the company reporting that 71% of its energy comes from renewable sources.
At Janata Jute Mills, rooftop solar meets the mill’s full electricity demand, supported by battery storage. Akij Particle Board Mills has also installed an 8.1MWp rooftop solar system, expected to generate around 9.3 million kWh of clean electricity annually and avoid approximately 7,452 tonnes of CO? emissions.
The Group has also worked with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) on renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, while pursuing measures including water reuse, net metering, waste-heat recovery and more efficient production technologies.
Sk. Bashir Uddin, Managing Director of AkijBashir Group, said joining RE100 marks an important step in transforming how the Group powers its operations and pursues sustainable growth.
“As the first company from Bangladesh to join this global initiative, we are proud to take a pioneering step towards 100% renewable electricity,” he said, adding that the Group aims to contribute to Bangladesh’s transition towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future while encouraging other businesses to accelerate their renewable energy journey.
The Group said its RE100 commitment forms part of its broader “Beyond Tomorrow” sustainability philosophy and will support its long-term efforts to decarbonize industrial operations while strengthening energy security.
