Dhaka, June 27, 2026: Uninterrupted electricity supply is the most critical requirement for the successful development of Bangladesh’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council (BEPRC) Chairman Mohammad Wahid Hossain said on Saturday.
Speaking at a seminar titled “The Electric Vehicle (EV): Challenges and Prospects in Bangladesh,” jointly organized by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA), Wahid stressed the need for stronger public-private collaboration to accelerate EV adoption.
He proposed establishing a dedicated coordination cell involving all relevant government agencies to streamline policy implementation. He also emphasized increasing the share of renewable energy in the power mix and developing a comprehensive database on EVs operating across the country to support future planning.

Industries Secretary Abdun Naser Khan said a draft national EV policy has already undergone inter-ministerial and stakeholder consultations and is expected to be finalized after incorporating recommendations. He said the policy aims to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while strengthening Bangladesh’s energy security.
Presenting the keynote paper, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed said Bangladesh must expand charging infrastructure, ensure reliable electricity supply, strengthen battery management systems and provide greater incentives for private investment. He noted that while nearly six million electric three-wheelers operate nationwide, only 669 electric cars have been officially registered with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
Officials from SREDA said 32 EV charging stations have been approved so far, with nine already operational, while experts called for quality standards for charging infrastructure, simplified import procedures, long-term financing and greater local manufacturing of EVs and components.
Following the seminar, DCCI and BSREA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on energy policy, innovation and market development.
