As Bangladesh braces for a potential power crisis this summer, many consumers are looking toward the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) with hope. The recent buzz around its first 1,200 MW unit being ready for trial has fueled expectations that it could offer some relief. However, a major hurdle remains—the infrastructure needed to transmit the electricity is not yet fully in place. To safely deliver power from RNPP to the national grid, five transmission lines with 230 kV and 400 kV capacities must be installed. So far, only two are ready. One more are expected to be completed in May this year, while the final two are slated for March next year. Given this timeline, many are optimistic that RNPP’s first unit could begin operations in October, helping to ease the power shortage by late summer. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will soon send a team to Bangladesh for a safety audit. This initial review will take about a week, followed by a final mission in a few months. Only after securing their approval can preparations begin to make the plant operational.

Despite the delays, the RNPP represents a significant milestone for Bangladesh. Once the full 2,400 MW facility is up and running next year, the country will officially join the ranks of nuclear-powered nations—a historic achievement that reflects years of effort and ambition in the energy sector.
