Bangladesh has come a long way in powering its cities and villages. In just three decades, electricity generation has jumped nearly tenfold. But when it comes to clean and renewable energy, the progress tells a very different story. Today, nearly all of our electricity comes from fossil fuels, with renewables making up just 2%. It’s a sign of how far we’ve fallen behind in a world that’s racing to tackle climate change. The new Renewable Energy Policy 2025 gives us a fresh shot with goals to meet 20% of our electricity needs from renewables by 2030 and 30% by 2040. But let’s be honest—we’ve seen good intentions before. What has been missing is follow-through. What are holding us back: weak institutions, investor uncertainty, rules that haven’t kept up with technology, and the everyday struggles of finding land and trained people to get projects off the ground. And just recently, 37 solar projects were abruptly cancelled, leaving the sector shaken and questioning what comes next. The interim government, guided by veterans, has a real chance to turn things around. But it needs more than speeches—it needs action. That means giving SREDA the tools to lead, clearing up policy confusion, and getting serious about execution.
People are paying attention—at home and abroad. And for millions, this isn’t about policy papers; it’s about clean air, stable power, and a future they can count on. The time to hesitate is long past. Renewable reckoning is here. Let’s make it count.
