Bangladesh is in the grip of a serious energy crisis, be it electricity or fuels, with gas shortages at the heart of the problem. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, the situation in Bangladesh has only gotten worse, despite repeated promises and price hikes for energy products. Industries, especially the ones that make products for exports, are struggling to keep up as they run out of gas to power their machines. Even small businesses and those trying to replace imported goods with locally made ones are feeling the pinch. The government is caught in a tough spot, struggling to find enough foreign currency to buy fuel and even facing shortages of local cash to pay for electricity and gas. Maintaining production from domestic gas fields will be a huge challenge. Half of the current production comes from the Bibiyana gas field which is on the verge of depletion. The production may suddenly deplete significantly. The government must prepare considering all these. This storm has created the worst economic crisis in Bangladesh's history.
Experts warn that things could get even worse before they get better, and it might be years before the situation improves. With rising costs for electricity and gas, businesses are worried about staying competitive. It's a tough time for everyone involved.
