Bangladesh power sector is marching forward towards achieving its power and energy sectors visions overcoming odds and challenges. Bangladesh is approaching to achieve a vision 2041 of 60,000 MW power generation capacity. This will require at least $70 billion investment. Apart from generation, similar level of investment will also be required for transmission and distribution networks expansion and upgrading. Nasrul Hamid MP, state minister of power claimed about $20 billion have been invested over the past few years to improve the power and energy sector. Environment impacts management issues and challenges are in active consideration in every energy and power sector activities. Works are ongoing towards achieving a balanced fuel mix. There is a plan to increase coal’s contribution to energy sector. Coal now contributes only 2%. Government is working to increase it to 35% by 2041. Nuclear power, renewable energy, fuel oil and power trading with regional countries are also getting attention. We see positive vibes and dynamism in the planning of energy sector. Let’s sustain the momentum and build an energy-sufficient Bangladesh.
