Power distribution system in Dhaka and Narayangaj is set to see a upgradation and capacity enhancement in a bid to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply and meet the future demands in the bustling cities.

 

Power Division plans to spend Tk 19.57 billion (1,957 crore) on power distribution infrastructure in Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) Ltd areas to make it ready for 2030 demands, official sources said.

 

A project with regard to this has already been launched very recently to execute the plan during January 2019 to June 2022 period.

 

The initiative came as part of the government’s short, mid and long-term plans for power generation and upgrading transmission and distribution systems to ensure full electricity coverage by 2021.

 

Important areas like Dhaka South City Corporation, a portion of Dhaka North City Corporation and Narayangaj city fall under DPDC area that sees 10.12 percent increase in power demand a year. 

 

Currently, DPDC area has a highest power demand of 1,531MW with a total subscribers of 11.78 lakh. Its system capacity is 2646MVA, suggest power division data.

 

Power distribution system of Dhaka metropolitan city and Narayangaj is now run through 14 132/33kv substations, 44 33/11kv substations, 228km transmission line, 157km overhead line, 232.85km underground cables, 4,661.23km 11kv and 11/0.4kv lines and 18,661 transformers.
