EP Report

The government has allocated Tk370 crore to install rooftop solar panels at 6,544 institutions under the Local Government Division, targeting around 300MW of electricity generation.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam announced the initiative at a press conference at the Secretariat recently.

The program covers local government offices, municipalities, union parishads, LGED and WASA facilities, public health engineering offices, and markets and growth centers across the country.

Around 150MW of the electricity generated will be used by the institutions themselves, while another 150MW will be supplied to the national grid through net metering.

Surplus electricity will be purchased at Tk10.50 per unit, with the investment expected to be recovered within three to four years.

Funds have already been released and separate instructions issued to the institutions. The government has set January 27, 2027 as the target for implementing the program, which is also expected to improve power reliability at public facilities and expand renewable energy use.
