Volume 15, Issue 7

There is no scope of making Bangladesh a sustainable country in the context of energy supply relying exclusively on renewable energy. Other than solar power all other sources of renewable have only marginal opportunities. Wind power in Bangladesh has no future. Renewable energy can only supply a very limited portion of country’s total energy supply. Therefore, energy efficiency and energy conservation are essential for Bangladesh. Sustainable supply and efficient use of primary energy is also of prime importance. Fuel import priority must be given on domestic fuel resource exploiting domestic fuel resources. Bangladesh has capacity for meeting the cost of importing coal and energy but constructing enabling fuel import infrastructure is a great challenge for the country. Then there is a need for huge investment and supplying power to all end users at affordable cost. Above all, development of critical mass of human capital required for managing mega energy and power projects, operation and maintenance is a very difficult task. These are some of the observations made by experts at a roundtable organized on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Energy & Power.
