Bangladesh stands on the threshold of a new era in electricity generation. After decades of planning, years of construction and repeated delays, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is approaching its first electricity supply to the national grid. The milestone promises to diversify the country's energy mix, but it also brings significant financial, technological and institutional responsibilities. Nuclear power is particularly important for an economy exposed to domestic gas shortages, volatile international fuel prices, and foreign-exchange pressures. Once both units reach their designed capacities, Rooppur could provide 2,400MW of electricity, strengthening supply security and reducing dependence on fossil-fuel generation. Its low operational carbon emissions also offer potential climate benefits. Yet the promise must be weighed against the price. Although the government maintains that the project's dollar-denominated cost has not increased, the depreciation of the taka has raised the local-currency burden of financing and debt repayment. Delayed generation has also postponed the expected economic returns. An unresolved power purchase agreement adds uncertainty over electricity pricing, payment obligations and the project's financial sustainability. Safety must remain nonnegotiable. Commissioning should proceed only after all technical tests and regulatory requirements are met. Bangladesh must also strengthen its nuclear workforce, emergency preparedness, regulatory independence and long-term arrangements for spent-fuel management.

The ultimate test will not be the date electricity generation begins, but whether Rooppur delivers safe, reliable and affordable power over decades. Turning its promise into a lasting national asset will require financial discipline, institutional competence and unwavering commitment to safety.
