Dhaka, July 4, 2019 (EP) - After successfully completion of the first phase of Jibika project, Chevron Bangladesh in collaboration with BRAC (when) launched the second phase to achieve sustainability of Jibika Village Development Organizations (VDOs) by enhancing their organizational capacity.

The phase II is expected to further strengthen the governance and management of the Jibika cooperatives and help them achieve long term sustainability by 2022.

The project, commenced in October 2015, is funded by Chevron under its Bangladesh Partnership Initiative (BPI) and implemented by BRAC under its Integrated Development Program.

Additional Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division Muhammed Ahsanul Jabbar spoke as chief guest at the launching ceremony while Executive Director (acting) of BRAC Asif Saleh chaired the program.

Among others, General Manager (Corporate Affairs) of Chevron Asia South Alexander Yell and Director (Corporate Affairs) of Chevron Bangladesh Ismail Chowdhury were present there.

During the program, Strategic Social Investment Manager (Corporate Affairs) of Chevron Bangladesh Chowdhury Adnan Zaman made a power point presentation about Chevron Bangladesh and its social investments.     

Jibika was designed to promote entrepreneurship for sustainable income growth of the poor and marginalized farming households around Chevron-operated gas field areas of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts.

However, the project focused on improving VDO institutionalization, governance and leadership capabilities to ensure sustainable goals. Along with this, they emphasized on entrepreneurship for a sustainable livelihood development.

As co-operatives there has been registration of 110 VDO’s where they kept 58% women executive committee, ensuring women empowerment.

IDEA, a Sylhet based NGO, is working with BRAC to implement the project in the field. From the year 2015-2019, about 20,000 people in the community benefited from the Jibika project.

Chevron had launched Bangladesh Partnership (BPI) Initiative to boost the economic development in 2014.

Chevron has been operating various gas fields in Sylhet, Moulvibazar (Bibiyana gas Field) and Habiganj (Jalalabad Gas field) area, contributing around 52% of total gas in the country to ensure reliable gas supply.

The ‘Jibika’ project is committed to break the borders of riddle of livelihood as value chain by promoting value chain management system.
