DHAKA, April 11, 2019 (BSS) – Prime Minister’s energy adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury Bir Bikram today said the government is set to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the upcoming Ramadan and the summer.

“The upcoming Ramadan and the current summer season will be kept free from loadshedding,” he said this while speaking as the chief guest at an inter-ministerial meeting held at Biduyt Bhaban.

The adviser said technical faults might occur but there is no need for loadshedding, adding, “Power division has been asked to ensure training and provide certificates to electricians working at households.”

He said petrol pumps, super markets and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG stations should avoid illumination activities in greater interest during the Ramadan and follow the existing rules.

Dr Towfiq said gas supply would have to be increased for keeping power supply normal.

The meeting also urged the people for avoiding use of air conditioners and other high power consuming home appliances during Iftar, Sehri time.

The adviser said CNG filling stations would have to remain closed from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm during Ramdan.

Power division secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikus said the government is capable of generating additional power against the current demand.

He said the government is putting efforts relentlessly to ensure adequate power supply across the country, adding, “Suddenly the demand for power increases in the evening during Ramadan. As the NLDC still operates manually, so we need cooperation.”

Dr Kaikaus requested all concerned to check electric equipment regularly to avoid incidents.

The inter-ministerial meeting also discussed various issues related to power supply during the month of Ramadan.

Expressing gratefulness to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for riding the country of darkness, the Shop Owners’ Association cut a 50-pound cake to mark the event of ensuring supply of power all over the country.

Chairman of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) engineer Khaled Mahmood, Shop Owners’ Association president Helal Uddin, secretary general Zahirul Haque Bhuiyan and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
