9th June 2023

Pune, June 9, 2023 (PR) –The Wind Independent Power Producers Association ("WIPPA"), with support from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), organized the Global Wind Day Conference 2023 in Pune last night.

This was to observe the Global Wind Day 2023. The conference was graced by Hon’ble Smt. Abha Shukla (IAS), Principal Secretary, Energy (Maharashtra), Sh. Dinesh Dayanand Jagdale, Joint Secretary, MNRE, and Sh. Ravindra S. Jagtap (IAS), Director General, MEDA, and was attended by senior leaders from across the wind industry, including central and state government officers, CEOs of prominent organizations, multilateral agencies, public sector officials, leading investors, manufacturers, project developers, and end users.

The meet provided a platform for the members of the industry to deliberate on the various levers that can help ramp up the wind energy industry to help India achieve its 2030 renewable energy targets.

Highlighting the MNRE’s, MEDA’s and Maharashtra government’s efforts in driving the development of wind power projects in the state of Maharashtra, Shri Pankaj Tagalpallewar, Additional Director General of MEDA, said, “Through their collaboration, wind projects have been successfully installed in the state thereby showcasing Maharashtra’s technical viability of wind power, and propelling its wind power development. The state government’s efforts in creating an investment-friendly environment have resulted in an impressive private investment in the state’s wind power sector. As of now, 5 GW private wind projects have been installed demonstrating investors’ confidence in the state’s wind power potential and commitment.”

Congratulating every wind stakeholder for believing in the power of wind and recognizing their decades of hard work, Shri. Dinesh Dayanand Jagdale, Joint Secretary of MNRE, expressed satisfaction at adding gigawatts on ground now, and at the robustness of the windfarms being built. He said, “India is proud of all the hard work being put in by each state, each stakeholder, each discom, each nodal agency. I am confident that with strong partnership between MahaUrja, MahaDiscom, MNRE, developers, manufacturers, and financiers, we will be able to hand-hold each other and take India’s wind journey forward. Going forward, ease of doing business will be taken up very aggressively to meet the country’s renewable energy targets.”

Emphasizing India’s capacity additions against the global numbers, Parag Sharma, WIPPA President and, Founder and CEO of O2 Power, expressed confidence on India’s potential, and has laid down some immediate action areas. He said, “From the Maharashtra government, the wind industry needs more IT enablement to facilitate project clearances, and a strong enforcement of law and order to enable Maharashtra to realize its 88 GW of wind potential from its current 5 GW installed capacity. At the central government, we request the implementation of the four policies – implementation of the bidding plan, ISTS open access, fixing the missing links in LPS, and greater facilitation of offshore wind bids.”

WIPPA, with the support of the MNRE, is also organizing a Global Wind Day run in New Delhi on Sunday, June 11, 2023, to highlight the MNRE’s and WIPPA’s role in reviving India’s wind sector and increase its general awareness and visibility, thereby adding to the call for faster progress in the sector. The event includes a 5 km and 3 km run and a 1 km walk for participants from various backgrounds.

The 15th of June marks Global Wind Day, a day when the world comes together to celebrate the wind, its power, and the possibilities it offers to enable a transition to a cleaner and sustainable future.
