National Youth Platform Inauguration Ceremony and Workshop on Clean Air and Renewable Energy for Bangladesh was held at the Institute of Energy, Dhaka University, in which representatives of various universities and youth organizations in the country participated.

 

The Earth Society established a National Youth Platform named Youth for CARE, the main goal of which is to unite, inspire, and encourage a variety of youth organizations to begin a campaign and advocacy effort to convince the government of Bangladesh that a "Clean Air Act" is necessary. To essentially persuade the decision-makers to adopt the appropriate actions, awareness-building and public opinion mobilization are required. In order to improve the understanding, knowledge, and abilities of youth groups on air pollution, Renewable Energy, campaigning, and advocacy, the National Youth Platform, Youth for CARE, will work with various CSO organizations, academic institutes, and research organizations. The community partners of Youth for CARE are Youth Ending Hunger Bangladesh, Bangladesh Debate Federation, We Can Cox's Bazar, YouthNet, and Green Savers.

 

The first cohort of the comprehensive training session on the Clean Air Act and renewable energy was held on September 23-24, 2022, at the Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka with the partners Climate Parliament Bangladesh, Institute of Energy, Dhaka University, and Bangladesh Solar Energy Society.

 

The inauguration ceremony of the training was attended by renowned experts and parliamentarians. Chief Guest Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal Pro-Vice Chancellor (Edu.), University of Dhaka, Special Guests Tanvir Shakil Joy, MP Chairman, Climate Parliament Bangladesh, Nahim Razzak, MP Convenor, Climate Parliament Bangladesh & Shameem Haider Patwary, MP Member, Climate Parliament Bangladesh, as well as Chair Prof. Dr. SM Nasif Shams, Associate Professor, Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka was present.

These trainings are being prepared so that at least 100 young people may learn about the "causes, impacts, and potential ways to reduce air pollution" and develop the skills necessary to run campaigns and advocate for policies that address the problem. The Earth Society intends to take action in these conditions to enhance the voices of the youth in order to significantly influence the national policy-makers to take real action to limit air pollution by reducing the use of fossil fuels.

 

“There are rules relating to air pollutions, but no specific laws. We should reduce our dependency on fossil fuel,” said Special Guest Mr.Tanvir Shakil Joy, MP, Chairman, Climate Parliament Bangladesh.

Special Guest Mr. Nahim Razzaq, MP, Convenor, Climate Parliament Bangladesh, said “We should increase our dependency on solar energy. Renewable Energy needs to be a part of our business.”

 

“To reduce air pollution, we must increase our reliance on Renewable Energy and reduce dependency on non-renewable energy” stated by the Special Guest Mr. Monower Mostafa, Country Lead, European Climate Foundation.

 

Chief Guest Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal Pro-Vice Chancellor (Edu.), University of Dhaka said, “Youth are the Agent of Change the World. Clean air and renewable energy are inextricably linked.” He discussed about the harmful aspects of fossil fuels and the impact on public health. He emphasized most on the research to reduce air pollution.

 

Dr. S.M. Nasif Shams, Associate Professor, Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka and also Vice President of Bangladesh Solar Energy Society said, “If our youth can be made aware of the importance of using renewable energy through such training, then the dependency on fossil fuels can be easily reduced.” Co-coordinator Md. Mosleh Uddin Suchok welcomed and presented two days training plans to the participants.

After the ceremony the training session on ‘Climate Systems and Models’ was conducted by Dr. Himangshu Ranjan Ghosh, Associate Professor, Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka. The second session was conducted by Dr. S.M. Nasif Shams, Associate Professor, Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka on ‘Renewable Energy Technology.’

 

The third session on ‘Policy Landscape of Renewable Energy in Bangladesh’ is conducted by Mr. Mohammad Alauddin, Ex-Chairman & Grade-1, SREDA.  The next session on ‘Air Quality Measurements and Monitoring’ was conducted by Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Dhaka. The day’s concluding session was conducted by Dr. Galib Hashmi, Lecturer, Institute of Energy, University of Dhaka on ‘Environment & Environmental Law: Part-1.’
