Dhaka, Oct 13, 2021 (BSS) - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said that Bangladesh is pursuing a long-term plan to expand renewable energy.
“Annual based plan has been taken to implement the renewable energy policy. A roadmap was also prepared to generate electricity from renewable energy by 2030,” he said while Cop 26 Regional Ambassador for the Asia-Pacific and South Asia Ken ‘o’ Flaherty paying a courtesy call on him at his ministry office at Secretariat.
During the meeting, they had discussion on clean power and energy, investment in energy transformation, increase in share of renewable energy, regional and international cooperation.
The state minister said that Bangladesh is working according to the plan by supporting the reduction of carbon emissions to zero.
He said that policies regarding the use of electronic vehicles are being formulated, adding, “Solar power expansion requires a lot of non-agricultural land; which is very difficult in densely populated areas like Bangladesh. Work is also being done on electricity and wind power from waste.”
“We have plans to import solar power from India and hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan. Bangladesh is constantly advocating for the expansion of renewable energy as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina became the President of Climate Venerable Forum,” Nasrul added.
He said that the COP 26 could contribute to enhancing cooperation with neighbouring countries.
Among others, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson was present during the meeting.
