First ever nuclear power project in the East European country of Belarus is almost set for commissioning in January, 2020. Start-up complex of the first unit of the power project is getting prepared for hot trials* at this moment. The project authority arranged a tour of start-up complex for over 50 journalists from the leading media of Turkey, Egypt, Poland, Lithuania, Uzbekistan and Russia last week to demonstrate their openness and transparency.  Belarusian power units are referential for most of the nuclear facilities constructed around the world including Bangladesh, using Russian technologies.

Media representatives were introduced to the main facilities of the start-up complex involved in electricity generation, including the turbine hall, the 330 kV gas-insulated switchgear building and a spray pool site. Foreign media for the first time were acquainted with the unique NPP air defense and emergency response techniques.

The Belarusian NPP is implemented in accordance with all IAEA requirements in an open and transparent manner.  According to the NPP authority holding press tour for foreign media for the fourth time is a confirmation of Belarus’s readiness for an open and constructive dialogue with all interested parties.

Belarus Minister for Energy Belarus Viktor Karankevich noted, “Belarus made its choice in 2007 in favor of developing a national nuclear energy program, which would allow to satisfy one third of the country's demand for affordable and reliable electricity, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and diversify energy sources by types of fuel.”

The Belarusian NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW is being constructed in Ostrovets region. Country’s first NPP as in Bangladesh features a Russian Generation III+ design.

  • Hot Trial is imitation of power unit operation with the only difference being the use of fuel assembly simulators instead of real fuel in the reactor. This test is carried out to confirm the quality of the equipment installation and the reactor unit compliance with the design parameters and operating characteristics.
