Nobel Laureate Prof. Mohammad Yunus assumed the role of interim government chief of Bangladesh on 8 August, following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country amid mass upsurge. The interim government, comprising 17 advisers, prioritizes restoring law and order. Prof. Yunus oversees multiple ministries, including Energy, Power & Mineral Resources, and plans to implement essential reforms to ensure free and fair elections. The nation faces severe challenges after the collapse of Hasina's 15-year regime. Many former ministers and party leaders are either in hiding or have fled the country as reports of corruption emerge, particularly in the energy and power sectors. These sectors, plagued by flawed policies and corruption, are nearing collapse. The outstanding bills in the energy sector amount to approximately US$5 billion, leading to power generation issues, load-shedding, and operational challenges for industries. The shift from domestic to imported fuel has exacerbated the crisis, with imported fuel now contributing 50% of the energy supply. The present situation is a consequence of the lack of appropriate planning or ignoring the plans over the past 16 years. Despite calls from local experts to explore domestic resources, progress has been slow. The interim government faces pressure to reform policies and reduce import dependency.

There are calls to repeal the Speedy Supply of Power and Energy Act 2010 which is considered to have facilitated corruption across the board, and to restore the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission's authority in setting fuel and electricity prices.
