Ensuring an uninterrupted supply of quality power is the main challenge of the country’s power sector at present. Transmission and distribution companies have undertaken projects to achieve the target by 2025. About 100 projects are under implementation, and most of these are expected to be completed by then. But the policymakers think at least substantial progress would take place if not entirely implemented. However, an uninterrupted supply at the right voltage and frequency to all consumers would require integrated development and coordinated operations of all segments in the power value chain. The manual and semi-automatic operations must be replaced with automation. There must also be redundancies built into the system to manage the contingencies like climate disasters, cyclones, flash flooding, etc. Provisions should also be there for quick response in the event of disruptions. Bringing 100% population under power supply coverage has created the new challenge of ensuring quality power supply to all on a sustainable basis. Nasrul Hamid, MP, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, is optimistic about achieving this. But experts believe that it would not be possible to achieve the goal by 2025. Achieving it by 2030 will also be contingent upon all segments of the power supply chain.

However, all the ongoing efforts would fall flat unless a sustainable supply of primary fuel and an appropriate fuel mix can be ensured in the power sector.
