A Pabna court recently sent five people, including a leader of the ruling Awami League-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League, to jail allegedly for attempting to steal iron rods from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

The police produced them before the court after arresting them on the charge of the attempt of theft, said Ishwardi police officer-in-charge Mohammad Asaduzzaman Asad.

The accused are former general secretary of Pakshi union Chhatra League Miraj Ali, 34, Rubel Islam Rajan, 38, and Mazharul Islam Saddam, 28, Kamrul Hasan Russell, 36, and Abul Kalam, 38, said the police.

They all were detained while lifting the rods and pipes from the project, said the officer.

About 10 metric tonnes of iron rods along with a truck were seized from them, he said.

The officer added that the seized truck with rods was in police custody.
