Unit-2 of the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Project-2 for the first time supplied electricity to grid recently. The 3+ generation VVER-1200 power unit was synchronized with the grid and achieved the capacity of 240 megawatts.  The unit is considered to be one of the reference units of under construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Project in Bangladesh.

Following its connection to the grid, the pilot production program starts and the capacity will gradually be increased up to 100% of the designed parameters. The power unit is scheduled for operational launch in December 2019, providing the European part of Russia with a reliable clean source of energy.

A lot of trials at different stages of low-power testing were held alongside the tests and examinations of different equipment to ensure reliable and safe operation of the unit.

Alexander Lokshin, First Deputy CEO of Rosatom State corporation and President at ASE EC said, ‘This is an important milestone that became possible thanks to prolonged and efficient work of a large team made of thousands of specialists and hundreds of organizations. There is still a lot of work to do before the operational launch of the power unit, but we can already say that the project has been a success’.

VVER-1200 is a flagship nuclear reactor and core product of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation. Being an evolution of VVER-1000 reactors that were built in Iran (Bushehr), India (Kudankulam) and China (Tianwan), the new design features improved performance across all parameters. Its capacity has increased by 7%, number of operational staff required is reduced by 30-40%, and the reactor’s lifetime is increased to 60 years with a provision of extending up to 80 years. Today this 3+ generation VVER 12oo reactors are considered to be the safest, that fully meets safety requirements, set by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Nuclear power units with VVER-1200 reactors are now at various stages of implementation in Bangladesh, Turkey, Finland, Belarus, Egypt, Uzbekistan and Hungary.

Rooppur Nuclear Power Project in Pabna will have two units with VVER 1200 reactor, each of 1,200 MW capacity. The first unit is expected to be commissioned in 2023 and the second in 2024.
