DHAKA, Jan 31, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said initiatives for the use of renewable energy would be increased side by side with developing communication network.

“Necessary awareness is a must for popularizing net metering system. People want uninterrupted electricity supply and we are increasing power generation along with transmission and distribution lines,” he said this while addressing as the chief guest on the occasion of completion of the first phase of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (REEP) at Hotel Inter Continental in the city.

Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity and owners can add it to the national grid. For example, if a residential customer has a PV system on his home’s rooftop, it may generate more electricity than the home uses during daylight hours.

The state minister said that GIZ and SREDA have to expand their working areas, adding, “Coordination with Bangladesh Bank would have to be increased so that more organizations can get ‘Green Fund’.”

Nasrul urged officials concerned to increase electricity generation and energy saving activities. The REEP was jointly implemented by German development partner organization GIZ and the Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).

German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has been providing technical support to ensure availability of sustainable energy in the country from 2004.

Power division secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus, Head of Development Corporation of German Embassy, Dhaka Andreas Hartmann and SREDA chairman Md Helal Uddin spoke on the occasion.
