Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd, a sister concern of Intraco Group, the country's first butterfly specialized park, received National Environment Award 2018 in environmental education and promotion category. It was awarded to Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd in recognition of its outstanding contribution in environmental education and promotion. Mr. Mohammed Riyadh Ali, managing director of Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd and Intraco Group, received the award from Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital today.
Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd was previously awarded the Climate Champion award in Green Business category in the HSBC-Daily Star Climate Award -2012 for its effort to protect the fast reducing population of butterflies and attract people towards nature. In addition, in 2013, “Divisional Environment Award" was awarded to The Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd from The Department of Environment, Chittagong Divisional Office as recognition of its contribution in environmental education, promotion and preservation of biodiversity.
The country's first and only butterfly specialized park “Butterfly Park Bangladesh Ltd” was established in Chittagong in 2012. The theme of the park is, "Save the Butterfly Save the Earth". The park is situated near Chittagong Airport and Naval Academy beside the coastal area of the river Karnafuli and the Bay of Bengal. The park was built under the supervision of renowned butterfly expert Dr. Shafiq Haider Chowdhury. Environmental green design has been kept in all the Landscape, Installation and Structures in the park. The park was the first and only living butterfly park among the SAARC countries when it was inaugurated.
33 species of butterflies have been able to breed at different times in the park. Among the breed butterflies more than 8,000 of the 17,000 have been released in open environment. In the park there are butterfly friendly 2000 trees of 250 species and ecologically helpful gardens. The park has been decorated with some themes - museums, archives, laboratories, Fern Land, Education Area, Kids Zone, Safari Zone and Lakeside Area.
Every year on World Environment Day, the Park is playing a role in increasing public awareness on the environment by organizing rallies, illustrations and seminars. Apart from that to increase the awareness for the environment and butterfly park celebrates Children's Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, International Mother Language Day, Eid day etc. In special days there are special arrangements for children's such like art competition, rallies and documentary shows are organized.
Each year, numerous students of different educational institutions participate in the park visit and education tour activities. By organizing various discussion meeting about the recent times natural disasters and the causes and solves of disasters (Nearly 50 discussion meetings organized so far) we make them aware of their doing. The park is playing a role in creating awareness about butterflies and the environment by participating in the tourism fair organized every year. This awareness is created especially by distributing leaflets containing information and pictures about extinct species of butterflies, showing documentaries and living butterflies.
