“Nuclear & Science Week 2018” organized by Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom in collaboration with Atomstroyexport, general contractor of Rooppur nuclear power plant, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and 'Energy of the Future', a Russian network of nuclear energy information centers around the Globe ends in Dhaka on July 20, 2018. The festival began in Pabna on July 14 and continued in 13 different venues at Iswardi, Kushtia, Rajshahi and Dhaka.  

 

 

The main objective of the festival was to promote science and technology, raise awareness among the Bangladeshi young generation about the nuclear industry through arranging popular educational and entertaining activities like interactive seminars, public talks,  science based quizzes and games, art competition ,friendly football match among others. Over 20 lectures were delivered including few  on nuclear topics  during the week. Hundreds of students from various universities and educational institutions actively took part in different events of the festival.

 

“Bangladesh, which sets its goal to emerge as a developed country by 2041 needs future  generation, well conversant with modern science and technology. The nuclear and science festival played an important role in popularizing science among the young generation and provided a platform for generation of innovative ideas for subsequent development" said Andrey Shevlyakov, CEO of Rosatom South Asia." The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is a symbol of Russia- Bangladesh cooperation. The festival gave an opportunity for participants to learn about nuclear technologies and how it facilitates improvement of quality of people's life and plays a vital role in sustainable development of the country”.


According to Professor Dr. Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan,  renowned Nuclear Scientist and former Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, the Nuclear and Science Week  achieved  a profound success. Spreading of  knowledge and understanding diffuse unnecessary panic about  nuclear energy and improves its public acceptance . Proper communication and Transparency  help reduce speculations.

 

"The week addressed  people's concern and  unknown fears about  nuclear power.  At the same time  it has been able to create awareness about positive influence of nuclear power in country's economy and human life," he said.

 

“I came to know about the vast field of nuclear science from the Nuclear and Science week. I also learnt about the opportunities of higher studies on Nuclear Engineering. It encouraged me to work in the Bangladesh  nuclear industry and contribute to the  development of our country” said Satyaki Banik, a third year student from BUET ,after participating in one of the seminars.

 

Experts and scientists from Russia and Bangladesh shared their knowledge and experience on different scientific topics especially related to nuclear energy. They answered to different questions from the participants and engaged in interactive discussions with them.

 

Topics of discussion were nuclear technologies, development of country’s nuclear power program, safety and security of 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactor, safety and security of nuclear power plant ,  role of nuclear technology in Bangladesh  science, economy and people's life, eco-friendliness of nuclear energy generation, various use of nuclear technology in human life, living near to nuclear power plant in Russia and working throughout the life in nuclear industry among others.

 

Professor Dr. Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan and Engr. M. Ali Zulquarnain renowned nuclear scientists and former Chairmen of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Oleg Tashlykov, nuclear expert from Russia and other Bangladeshi scientists and experts addressed the seminars and talk shows during the festival.

 

The science festival was organized on different dates at Pabna University of Science and Technology,  Pabna Public Library,Kushtia Islamic University, University of Rajshahi, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Military Institute of Science and Technology, Nuclear Energy Information Centres at Ishwardi and in Dhaka.
