17th July 2018

Dhaka, July 17 (UNB) – State-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) leased out its 149 km optical fibre (from Hathazari to Cox’s Bazar) to Grameenphone (GP) for a 15 years operational period.

The two entities signed an agreement in this regard at PGCB Headquarters in the city on Monday.

A senior PGCB official informed that the GP, which has been using the same overhead optical fibre at the same line, will obtain the right of the line for next 15 years from 2016 under the new agreement.

A PGCB statement mentioned that the GP has been using the line since 2008 under an agreement expired in 2016. But after a negotiation between the two organisations, the two sides signed a fresh agreement with a new rate of the optical fibre use rent with retrospective effect from 2016.

Under the new agreement, the PGCB will get annually Tk 1.07 crore as a rent for the line.

The PGCB statement mentioned that its optical fibre is more reliable because of its overhead installation which offers uninterrupted service for its clients.

PGCB officials informed that it has got the longest overhead optical fibre line of over 5500 km having a number of pairs, which were mainly leased out to different mobile phone operators and Nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN) service providers.

However, GP has been the largest client of the PGCB optical fibre as it has a agreement with GP for use of 3600 km lines besides the latest lease-out agreement while state-owned BTCL has a deal to use 3000 km optical fibre.

Robi and some other companies have similar agreements with the PGCB, said the official.

PGCB company secretary MD Ashraf Hossain and PG chief procurement officer Abul Quasem signed the agreement on behalf their respective organisations while PGCB managing director Masum Al Beruni, executive director Emdad Islam and other top official of the two entities were present at the signing ceremony.
