   Dhaka, Feb 27 (UNB) – Interests of American public and private companies are gradually growing about Bangladesh’s power and energy sector.

 

US Ambassador in Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat informed this while meeting with State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid at his office at the Power and Energy Ministry on Tuesday.

 

She said now many US companies like Excelerate Energy, SunEdison, and GE are willing to work in the Bangladesh’s power and energy sector.

 

She also informed that some US companies like Cheniere are also keen to work in the country’s LNG (liquefied natural gas) sector.

 

Both the state minister and the ambassador discussed different issues of interests of their respective countries during their meeting. 

 

The US ambassador noted that famous American power company GE is interested in setting up power generation plants in both public and private sector.

 

Specially, the US envoy said, the GE has been keenly interested in power generation through using different technologies and equipment of heat recovery, steam turbine, gas turbine and gas generator in different projects in Matarbari, Ashuganj, Chittagong, Patuakhali and Cox’s Bazar.

 

Welcoming the US companies’ interest about Bangladesh, Nasrul Hamid said still American investment in power and energy sector is very little compared with other nations.

 

He sought the US Ambassador’s cooperation to pursue the American investment in the country’s one of the most potential sectors.

 

He informed the US envoy about the latest developments in power and energy sector of Bangladesh and also briefed about future plans of the government regarding the sector.

 

The junior minister noted about the untapped potentials of power, energy, renewable energy, solar, and waste to energy sectors.

 

Nasrul Hamid said Bangladesh is receiving about $3.5 billion investment each year in power and energy sector.

 

“If the US comes forward to invest in Bangladesh, it will bring a win-win situation for both the nations,” he said adding that a good investment-friendly environment was created in this region. 

 

Power secretary Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus and regional manager of the US Commerce Department Malcolm Burke were also present during the meeting
