The Payra power plant project is progressing fast. With this, Bangladesh is expected to enter the era of imported coal-based power generation from the middle of next year. This power plant is going to be the trendsetter by overcoming all the problems as the fastest developed project. It would act as the pathfinder for all other imported coal-based mega projects. But the coal transportation remains the main challenge. The shallow depth coastal areas would not give access to large and medium capacity coal carriers. The initiatives for coal port and deep-sea port also remain at very early stages. Experts observe that transshipment by lighterage vessels from mother ships anchored in deep sea would be extremely challenging. Bringing mother vessels at Andaman port and using lighterage vessels for carrying coal would require time and additional money. But keeping all these into context, BCPCL in general and NWPGCL in particular deserve accolades for the unique work done in expediting implementation of Payra power plant project. Once the Payra project is completed, Bangladesh will begin the modern Ultra Super Critical power generation technology-based thermal power generation.
