The present proven reserve of natural gas would completely deplete by 2031 as estimated by the government. But some new discoveries may be made within this time. New gas findings at Bhola and Shahbajpur have made all optimistic. The gas demand in 2041 would be 6,000 MMCFD. So, there is no alternative to increasing LNG import progressively. The government is working on plans for importing 2,500 MMCFD LNG by 2025 and 3,000 MMCFD by 2030. But the most intriguing question is that what will be the cost price with every incremental LNG import. Experts observe that it may be possible giving indicative price for 2025 and 2030. LNG price would depend on global price trend. Industry owners must have to make future plan considering higher gas price. Bangladesh unfortunately lost the most viable and affordable option of exploiting own coal resource. If it could be done, exclusive reliance on gas could have been reduced to a great extent. Now Bangladesh has to ensure energy and fuel efficiency and go for low energy-intensive industries to offset the effect of higher price of gas.
