Prolonged gas crisis has stagnated industrial development in Bangladesh. Production of existing industries all over the gas franchise is seriously affected. Domestic cooking and commercial activities are also being affected. About 1,000-1,500 MW installed capacity of power remaining idle for gas crisis. Production of most of the fertilizer plants are forced to remain suspended for most part of a year. New industrial gas connection remains suspended for almost 8 years. Export-oriented industries are using diesel and furnace oil for operating their captive power generation plants and LPG for industrial operation. Consequently, BPDB has to purchase this power at higher price from private producers. The onus of higher price is transferred to end users. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had given highest priority to exploring and exploiting own fuel resources. If the govt headed by his daughter Sheikh Hasina could adopt the policy and strategy for exploring own fuel on priority basis, the present uncertain situation of sustainable energy supply would be effectively dealt with. It will be a big step towards ensuring fuel supply for power generation and power supply to all at affordable cost in 2041.
