About 0.5 million people in Agartala town were without drinking water supply recently as it was stopped by the authorities following contamination of Howrah river water by ONGC waste.

"Four major water treatment plants in the city were closed since yesterday following contamination of water with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) drilling waste," water and sanitation chief engineer, Bishu Debbarma said.

"We are trying hard to restore the drinking water supply to the inhabitants," he said.

Nineteen rivers from Tripura including Howrah flow into Bangladesh, according to reports by some Indian media.

The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh here, Mohammad Shakhwat Hussain said that the matter was informed to Dhaka for taking appropriate measures. They are also monitoring the situation.
