The state-owned power transmission agency, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), recently leased out about 149 km optical fibre cable to country’s top mobile phone operator Grameen Phone (GP).
Under the deal, the GP will get right to use 149 km optical fibre between Hathazari in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar for 15 years period.
The GP will pay about Tk 1.07 crore annually for using the optical fiber connectivity. Earlier it used the optical fiber at comparatively higher tariff during the period 2008 and 2016.
According to PGCB, the optical fiber of PGCB is much more reliable as it’s running through overhead cables. “We have some 5,500 kilometers overhead optical fiber connectivity across the country…it is increasing gradually,” said an official.
Two other private telecom operators, Banglalink and Robi, also received optical fiber line from PGCB for a period of 15 years. It also plans to sign separate deal with state-owned Teletalk for 1000 km fiber uses.
