EP Report

Implementation of at least 10 medium and large power projects, mostly in the public sector, is being delayed due to poor project monitoring.

The delay in the power projects having the combined capacity to generate 2,354MW of electricity may add to the looming supply-demand mismatch of power in the current year, officials concerned said.

Some of the proposed power plants were expected to commence electricity generation at the end of 2017 while the others are meant to help meet the growing electricity demand during the upcoming hot summer.

“We have already asked the authorities concerned or the project directors to expedite the projects so that the power plants can commence electricity generation in time,” an official concerned said.

These projects include at least five public-sector projects having the combined capacity to generate 1,423MW of electricity. These power plants were scheduled to commence electricity generation by December 2017 or in the middle of this year.

Sources said fund crisis, poor power evacuation infrastructure, transfer of ownership and poor project monitoring are the key reasons behind the delay.
