MAN Diesel & Turbo has won the contract to supply a 12V35/44 gas engine with dual turbocharger for a heat/power cogeneration unit in southern Germany.

The new MAN unit has an output of 7.5 megawatts (MW) and will replace the existing two engines – each with an output of 3 MW – at the Schwäbisch Hall cogeneration unit that has generated electrical energy and heat for the local district-heating grid since 1997. The delivery and service specification of the contract includes engines and ancillaries, plus an oxidation catalytic converter and the engineering for heat extraction.

"Schwäbisch Hall Municipal Utilities are pioneers in the field of the energy transformation and decentralized generation," said Hajo Hoops, Senior Sales Manager in the Power Plants division of MAN Diesel & Turbo.

"The decision toorder from MAN was made on the basis of the outstanding efficiency and flexibility of the system. It will also be possible to participate in the balancing energy market in the future; the existing district-heating storage component sallow the decoupling of electrical and thermal energy-generation."
